Windows Errors

A Windows error is an error that happens when an unexpected condition occurs or when a desired operation has failed. When you have an error in Windows, it may be critical and cause your programs to freeze and crash or it may be seemingly harmless yet annoying.

Blue Screen of Death

stop error screen or bug check screen, commonly called a blue screen of death (also known as a BSoD, bluescreen), is caused by a fatal system error and is the error screen displayed by the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems upon encountering a critical error, of a non-recoverable nature, that causes the system to "crash".

Damaged DLLs

One of the biggest causes of DLL's becoming corrupt/damaged is the practice of constantly installing and uninstalling programs. This often means that DLL's will get overwritten by newer versions when a new program is installed, for example. This causes problems for those applications and programs that still need the old version to operate. Thus, the program begins to malfunction and crash.

Freezing Computer

Computer hanging or freezing occurs when either a program or the whole system ceases to respond to inputs. In the most commonly encountered scenario, a program freezes and all windows belonging to the frozen program become static. Almost always, the only way to recover from a system freeze is to reboot the machine, usually by power cycling with an on/off or reset button.

Virus Damage

Once your computer has been infected with a virus, it's no longer the same. After removing it with your anti-virus software, you're often left with lingering side-effects. Technically, your computer might no longer be infected, but that doesn't mean it's error-free. Even simply removing a virus can actually harm your system.

Operating System Recovery

Reimage repairs and replaces all critical Windows system files needed to run and restart correctly, without harming your user data. Reimage also restores compromised system settings and registry values to their default Microsoft settings. You may always return your system to its pre-repair condition.

Reimage patented technology, is the only PC Repair program of its kind that actually reverses the damage done to your operating system. The online database is comprised of over 25,000,000 updated essential components that will replace any damaged or missing file on a Windows operating system with a healthy version of the file so that your PC's performance, stability & security will be restored and even improve. The repair will deactivate then quarantine all Malware found then remove virus damage. All System Files, DLLs, and Registry Keys that have been corrupted or damaged will be replaced with new healthy files from our continuously updated online database.

In some cases I get the following error: The error points to the line of code above. I know the file doesn't exist, but I don't want this error to appear. file vb6 dir share|improve this question asked May 7 '13 at 9:32 Hrqls 2,34631950 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted I forgot to mention something: the filename is dynamic and depends on another process. I just noticed that when the error occurs, the other process returns trash causing a long filename of about 2000 characters. I never realized that there was a limit to the length of filenames. I created a small project to test this and it turned out that the upper limit is 259 characters: Option Explicit Private Sub Command1_Click() Dim strFile As String Dim intLength As Integer strFile = App.Path & "\" intLength = 259 - Len(strFile) strFile = strFile & String(intLength, "a") If Len(Dir$(strFile)) = 0 Then MsgBox "file does not exist" End If End Sub Using a value of 259 works fine, but 260 gives the error. share|improve this answer answered May 7 '13 at 9:38 Hrqls 2,34631950 2 +1 for answering own question and persistance. As for magic 260, it is likely that Dir$() hits MAX_PATH limit:‌px –Ilya Kurnosov May 7 '13 at 9:54 ah thanks! that's it indeed. would have been nice though if they would have provided another error than "file not found" :) –Hrqls May 7 '13 at 9:56 @Hrqls I suspect that the VB runtime simply copied 260 characters from the file string into a buffer of 260 characters (i.e. sized to MAX_PATH), thus implicitly truncating the file name to 259 chars (including null termi

Have checked spelling of file and in the open statement. the file is in the same directory as the program. never had this problem before. error always occurs at Open "113Data.txt" For Input As #1 which is the first thing the program does. I can put a vb2010 program data vb6 on file name (which is in a different directory) in the above open statement and it will go get it and load it with no problem. All I have been able to find is that a .dll file is missing or corrupted, but no hint as to which .dll or where it is located or what to do about it. I'm an old rookie. I'm using VB6 because the vb2010 program I wrote for my wife's desktop vb6 on error (XP SP3)won't load on her laptop (XP SP3) because of "no certified jit debugger" although it has the required .NET platform installed. If you could help me on this one the VB6 question won't be critical, although I would still like to know about the error 53 problem. Thanks for anything you can share. Maybe a test function to retrieve all the file names from the application directory, then example them as a byte[] to see if there is something hinky going on. Or just rename the file in Windows Explorer so you know its not odd, then try again with the new name. As for the VB2010 version - I'm not much on VB, but perhaps you compiled it as 'debug' and not 'release' so its trying to send to a debugger that doesn't exist. of Use Bugs: Error 53 when calling functions from custom DLL Author(s) Dev Ashish If you have custom DLLs created in VB 6 or VB 5, you might get error 53 (file not found) in the declare statement itself. Private Declare Function fDLLFunction Lib "C:\My Documents\DLLs\SomeDLL.DLL" _ (Byval strParam1 as string, lngParam2 as Long) as long This is caused by a missing Dependency file (runtime files) on your machine that's required by the DLL. The error message "File Not Found" is not being generated by the DLL file itself, but Access since it cannot locate the other required DLLs. To find out if the DLL has any dependencies, you can use one of these two methods. Download Dependency Walker Search your hard drive for any dependent files and make sure they exist and are registered. Use Windows NT's QuickView utility to view the DLL's Import Table. All dependent files should be listed here. Note that Windows 95 and 98 versions of the QuickView utility do not allow you to view this information. 1998-2010, Dev Ashish & Arvin Meyer, All rights reserved.
